Then I put that training to use while touring the world as a multi-instrumentalist and singer with pop icons including Etta James on tour with The Rolling Stones, Frank Zappa, Stevie Nicks, Michael McDonald, and as Musical Director for Bette Midler. I’ve composed for TV shows like “Cybill” and “Baywatch,” performed with Paul McCartney, Sting, Chuck Berry, Bonnie Raitt, Boz Scaggs, and recorded with Prince, The Moody Blues, Gladys Knight, Wilson Pickett, blah, blah, blah.

Well, not only did I survive all that, I came through it in great shape. People have always asked me how I do it, and I’ve finally decided to reveal my secrets. Now, about that long slow distance approach to cardio fitness.
In 1996, a Japanese researcher named Dr. Izumi Tabata developed an exercise protocol that improved both aerobic and anaerobic capacity more quickly and to a greater extent than any other system reported in exercise science, and the workout only lasts four minutes! It consists of thirty-second segments divided into twenty seconds of full out effort followed by ten seconds of rest. In four minutes, you can do that eight times. It’s very difficult, but the results Tabata discovered are astounding.
So if you think you have to spend forty minutes or more before you even start to get aerobic benefits, sorry, but that’s old thinking and it’s just not true. Tabata’s research was done using stationary exercise bicycles, but many different exercises can be used. If you really feel the need to blow an hour of your precious time pounding away on a dreadmill or jogging around the neighborhood in the rain, be my guest. But if you want a cardio workout that gives you better results in far less time, I suggest you rethink your approach. What’s more, other research found that fat loss was nine times greater with intermittent, high intensity cardio compared to long slow distance. So you can burn more fat and gain more cardio benefit in far less time than was previously believed. Once again, real world results, backed by real science.
The cardio phase of my workout is similar in concept to the Tabata protocol, and in fact, the strength workout is designed to provide cardio improvement as well. That’s right folks, I get you both coming and going, because I’m interested in what works. The strength exercises build strong, functional muscles, and the cardio workout builds your heart and lungs and burns off the fat so your new muscles will show. Proper nutrition puts both systems into high gear and ignites the fat-burning fire. It’s like a three-legged stool; it’s only solid if all three legs are in place and equal. Strength, cardio, nutrition – take away any one of the three and the other two are far less effective. I study and research the synergy among all three elements continuously for my own well being, and now you can benefit from my efforts.
